Union tops Wilmington, reaches title game
Union (53) Vs. Wilmington (40)
The Union High boys basketball team hopes to defend its own court once again.
Last night’s 53-40 win over Wilmington put the Scotties in the championship game of their own Union Boosters Tournament. Union (4-4) faces Laurel, which upset Shenango, in today’s championship game at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s a nice win. It’s always nice to get to the championship of your own tournament,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “The kids are playing hard. I like how they are playing. We have section play coming up soon, so we’ll just look to build off this.”
The Scotties opened with a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. They used a 17-point second quarter to push their buffer to 27-12 at halftime. The Greyhounds came back in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 37-28, but Union sealed the win with a 16-point fourth quarter.
Ben Young paced the Scotties with 18 points and six assists. He connected on three of his five 3-point attempts. Joe Salmen, who made two of his four 3-pointers, finished with 13 points.
