New Castle throttles South Fayette for sixth win
New Castle (80) Vs. South Fayette (65)
The New Castle High boys basketball team got payback last night.
Ousted in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals last year by South Fayette, the Red Hurricane breezed to a redeeming 80-65 nonsection road victory over the Lions.

New Castle (6-0) is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“I think for my guys, it was something that was important to them,” ’Canes coach Ralph Blundo said of atoning for last season’s playoff setback. “South Fayette had a very good team last year and our guys were looking forward to playing this game and it showed.”

South Fayette (4-2) won last year’s district semifinal matchup, 56-42, but lost in the championship game to Montour. The Lions also lost in the state semifinals to Montour.

Corey Eggleston paced five New Castle players in double figures with 20 points. He added seven assists and five steals as well.

“Corey was just Corey,” Blundo said. “You can just rubber stamp his stats line. He’ll give you those consistent numbers every night. Knowing you have that in the bag is pretty special.”

Shawn Anderson was next with 16 markers and 12 rebounds, while Anthony Richards and Antonio Rudolph tossed in 15 markers apiece.

Brandon Domenick chipped in with 10 points and eight assists. Richards contributed four steals.

The ’Canes built a 36-29 halftime advantage before pushing it to 66-45 after three periods.

“I thought we played really well and extremely hard,” Blundo said. “That’s a good basketball team we played.

“It was close early on. But I think our pressure got to them a little bit. We were comfortable playing faster than they were.”

Zach Beck recorded a team-high 18 points for South Fayette.

New Castle was 30 of 64 from the field, which included a 10-of-28 performance from behind the arc.
