Bowen’s big 3s spark Wilmington
Wilmington (57) Vs. Mercer (40)
Matt Bowen’s record-setting performance helped Wilmington stay hot in a District 10, Region 2-AA matchup against Mercer.
The Greyhounds beat the Mustangs, 57-40, to notch their third straight win in Region 2-AA. Bowen drained seven 3-points in the victory, a mark that Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said was believed to be the school record.
The Greyhounds, playing for a shot in the District 10 playoffs, were up 25-17 at halftime. Bowen, who scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds, started to heat up in the third quarter.
“He was on fire tonight,” Jeckavitch said. “He had four 3s in the third quarter to help us pull away. He couldn’t miss.”
Wilmington hit 11 from beyond the arc as a team. Curtis Bretz nailed two, and Josh Tekac and Jesse Hilliard each made one. The Greyhounds (5-4 conference, 9-12 overall) are trying to bounce back from a 2-4 start in region play.
“They were playing this game like it was a playoff game,” Jeckavitch said. “I told them they have to win to get in, and that’s the mentality we have to take.”
Wilmington has a showdown with first-place Sharpsville on Friday.
