Lady Lancers race past Shenango
Neshannock (69) Vs. Shenango (37)
The Neshannock High girls basketball team wasn’t about to let history repeat itself.
A few days after blowing a big lead and suffering their first loss of the season, the Lady Lancers started off hot and never let up in a 69-37 WPIAL Section 2-AA victory over Shenango.
Neshannock’s Ericka Warvell scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the first quarter, which the Lady Lancers (2-0, 7-1) dominated, 27-8. They didn’t slow down like they did against Sharpsville last Thursday, which is a trait Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said she hopes the girls took from the loss.
“You have to learn to play with a lead,” she said. “When a team is down, you have to finish them off. You can’t allow people to stick around in those games because then they start to believe and gain some confidence. That’s when you get yourself in trouble. We’re still learning that.”
The Lady Lancers outscored Shenango (0-3, 2-8) in every quarter and shot 28 of 59 (47 percent) from the field, their highest percentage of the year, Grybowski said. Neshannock’s Chelsea Kauffman reached double figures with 18 points, six assists and five steals, while Marianne Piatek scored 13, dished out seven assists and grabbed five steals.
The Lady Wildcats had seven players score. Amanda Herb’s seven was a team high.
“We went up against a lot of seniors, a very talented team and a very well-coached team,” Shenango coach Brian Turk said. “They played tremendous defense and caused a lot of turnovers, and that proved costly.”
