Fennick leads Laurel to big win
Laurel (62) Vs. South Side Beaver (39)
A career high by Todd Fennick led the Laurel High basketball team past South Side Beaver last night.
Fennick, a junior, scored a personal-best 22 points, making 10 of 15 shots, to pace the Spartans to the 62-39 nonsection win. Laurel (2-4) led 30-20 at halftime. The fact that two other players scored in double figures and Laurel played well defensively created a solid all-around performance for the Spartans.
“Considering we were playing on back-to-back nights, I was really pleased with how they came out and played,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said. “We jumped on them early and we played with intensity throughout the game. We’re gaining confidence and playing better, so I was really pleased with the effort tonight.”
Chad Long created a lot of the offense for the Spartans as he scored 15 points and dished out nine assists. Ryan Melichar added 11 points for Laurel.
“Chad Long had an excellent floor game,” Tinstman said. “He had nine assists really made a big difference in our scoring. That created some shots for Fennick. He was able to take the ball inside and hit some shots from the perimeter.”
Justin Gentile led South Side Beaver (0-6) with 14 points.
