Lady Warriors notch seventh win
Mohawk (56) Vs. Ellwood City (39)
Balance propelled the Mohawk High girls basketball team to victory last night.
Kelly Fox netted 15 points and Alyssa Natale chipped in with 14 to lead the Lady Warriors to a 56-39 nonsection win over Ellwood City Lincoln.
“Any win is an important win,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “Ellwood City is a good team; they’re on track and I think they will do good things.”
Natale tallied 10 of her points in the first quarter, but the Lady Wolverines (5-2) held a 15-13 lead after the opening frame. Fox added 10 of her markers in the final quarter as Mohawk (7-3) pulled away.
“The first quarter we didn’t play well defensively,” O’Lare said. “Our goal is to keep the opposition under 10 (points) a quarter.”
Michelle Nocera registered a game-high 22 points for Ellwood City, 17 of which coming in the first half. Jenna Ricciuti chipped in with 10.
“Michelle played her normal game,” Lady Wolverines coach Bill Gottuso said. “She played hard like she normally does; we just need a lot more people to contribute.
“We got outplayed by a better team. Natale beat us in the first half and Fox beat us in the second half.”
Mohawk’s Meghan Laughner guarded Nocera in the second half and limited her to just five markers, all of which coming from the foul line.
“Meghan did an outstanding job guarding her in the second half,” O’Lare said.
