Thomas leads Scotties past ’Cats
Union (58) Vs. Shenango (40)
Anthony Thomas continued his hot shooting for the Union High boys basketball team last night.
Thomas rifled in a game-high 27 points for the Scotties in a 58-40 win over Shenango in the Union Booster Tournament.
Thomas came in averaging 29.2 points a contest.
The Wildcats (1-7) grabbed a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. However, Union rallied in the second to post a 26-19 halftime advantage. The Scotties rolled in the second half for 32 points to wrap up the triumph.
“I think we were a little sluggish; we hadn’t played a game for a week and our legs were not there early on,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “In the second and third quarters, we picked it up and got our basketball legs again. Overall, it was a well-played game by both teams.”
Devonta Thomas added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Union (6-0). Ronnell Hunt finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Jeff Williams paced Shenango with 17 points and Joe Colavecchia added seven.
“I thought our guys played really hard. Union is one of the betters teams we have faced and I thought our guys played hard and got after it,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “I was pleased with their effort. I think we’re continuing to get better every game. We took a step in the right direction.”
