Mercer County cruises past Lawrence
Mercer County (78) Vs. Lawrence County (68)
Girls basketball players made the most of one final appearance at the high school level Saturday.
The Mercer County All-Stars built a 20-point lead and cruised to a 78-68 victory over Lawrence County in the Lawrence-Mercer County All-Star game at Wilmington High School.
The tournament, which is for seniors, was organized by Wilmington coach Brian Turk after an absence of about five years.
“I think it was great getting it back together again,” Turk said. “It’s the last high school game for these girls.
“For many, it was their last basketball game. Hopefully we can turn it into a bigger thing. Overall, it was a pretty decent game and both teams had a lot of fun.”
Riverside High’s Amy Gatnarek earned MVP honors for Lawrence County, posting 19 points. Lady Panthers teammate Brooke Mulneix chipped in with 17. Mulneix won the 3-point shootout as well.
Neshannock’s Courtney Frengel added 10 markers for Lawrence County, which was coached by Mohawk’s Mike O’Lare.
“I enjoyed working with the girls from different schools,” O’Lare said. “I think it was a great event and hopefully it continues for a long time.”
New Castle’s Jazelle Dennis netted seven markers for Lawrence County.
Ashley David (West Middlesex) won Mercer County MVP honors, netting a team-high 10 points. All 15 Mercer County players scored.
Greenville’s Kristin Ammons was the 3-point shootout runner-up.
